Electrochemical Cell | Electrolytic Cell |
It converts chemical energy into electrical energy. | It converts electrical energy into chemical energy. |
It is based upon the redox reactions which are spontaneous. | The redox reactions are non-spontaneous and take place only when energy is supplied. |
The chemical changes occurring in the two beakers are different. | Only one chemical compound undergoes decomposition. |
Anode (-ve) - Oxidation takes place. | Anode (+ve) - Oxidation takes place. |
Cathode (+ve) - Reduction takes place. | Cathode (-ve) - Reduction takes place. |

grt work :)
ReplyDeleteA major mistake. Replace the word electrochemical by voltaic. Electrolytic and voltaic cell fall under the group electrochemical cell
DeleteElectrochemical / voltaic / galvanic cell are the same . Electrolytic does not fall under electrochemical cell. Agree with the post
Deleteplease refer NCERT class 12 electrochemistry chapter it has mentioned volatic and electrolytic as two sub division of electrochemical cell.

ReplyDeleteBut i read from a textbook, which stated that electrolytic cell is one of type of electrochemical cell...like electrochemical cell is the parent...and Galvanic cell & Electrolytic cell are the children...i'm confused...what do u say??
ReplyDeleteYes u are correct. electrochemical cells lable should be replaced by galvanic cells.
DeleteElectrolytic cell is also a electrochemical cell. With non spontaneity and forced flow of e-
